Art Journal Challenge Week 10, 11, & 12

I have completed three art journal pages and I am glad to be back doing them.  I so enjoy the process and sometimes they just go to fast for me!  I am glad that week 12 was simple because I really don't want them to all look the same.  On week 12 I decided, since it was simple, to show you the different steps it took to create that page So, welcome to art class I am glad you are here!

Week 10 List of Me Mar. 12
This weeks page was on a list of words that would describe me and the first thought that came to me was subway art.  If you can remember this book had ladies pictures already glue in and this one was one I wanted to use.  I first painted over the magazine picture and began to paint in my style the lady.

I first put floral tissue paper on the top since I am a floral nut and of course her shirt is pink I did a variety of stamps using ink pads, sometimes I would hand write, and others I would use a stamp with acrylic paints.  I love using the paints because it gives you that raised effect.

Week 11 To Do List Mar. 19th
This weeks page was on my list of things I wanted to accomplish that week.  When I began this page I just started gluing down different kinds of scrapbooking paper, old book pages, and part of a old receipt on the page really without thinking.

Then I used paint over the papers and a flower stencil in pink and white along with a paper plate holder I used as a stencil in the upper left hand corner in greenThe word Mar. was used using a clear stamp and purple metallic paint to give it that shimmer look and ended it with free hand swirls.

Week 12 Wings Mar. 26th

This weeks theme was on wings, and I chose to do it on the butterfly's wings.   Flowers all around here are blooming and I see all kinds of buds on the branches and that part reminds me of the butterfly so thus the theme.

The color scheme I wanted to achieve was what it would look like from the inside of a cocoon. So first I found some old pages from a play book with a title on one of them with the words WINGS!  Hard to see it hear but I do draw a black line around it and put the date there.

After I glued the pages down I use a distress ink pad in Antique Linen around parts to give it that aged look.  Then I used brown acrylic paint around the rest of the pages.
Next I used cream and white acrylic paint with my brayer to give all that wonderful texture like inside a cocoon.  Then to start adding the poem, I used a variety of letter stamps with a distressed ink pad in Walnut. I really didn't want the poem to stand out so that is why I chose this color.

Then I glued down the wingsI chose a bright color to represent the beauty of the butterfly as it emerges from the pale color of the cocoon.  I also, circled the title "wings" on the old book page to make it stand out.
I chose a poem as my text which I thought represented the page perfectly.  I used white acrylic paint around the wings and used a white gel pen to do some doodling inside the wings.  Then, I added the month and date in the box I created around the play title.  I really like this page a lot because of the simplicity of it.  Well, I hope you have enjoyed our art class today and can't wait for our next one together.

Art Journal Challenge: Week 4

Well, I am starting to work on my art journal challenge pages again and I am really behind!  You just can't get behind on these types of things.  I got caught up on the photo challenge and should have done the current week's art journal page instead of thinking I needed to try to get caught up and not doing any of them.   I am going to start on the current week and then go back and catch up when I can, that way it won't continue to stay behind.

Week 4: My Word For The Year Jan 29th

This week's challenge was on My Word for the Year and I chose TRUST.  I thought this fit because since we have moved to a new city and home and not sure what life will bring I just have to remember to trust God and know that he is in control.  Some days this is very challenging for me and I am not sure why we are here and I just want to go back home to Minnesota to everything that is familiar to me, so that is how I picked my word.

This page took me awhile because it just wasn't turning out like I wanted and I walked away from it and had to come back and try again.  The cloud and hand of God idea came from a cartoon I kept from a newspaper over a year ago and thought it would work great for this challenge. The woman on the page is, of course, me and I just love doing female faces.  Why? not sure so you will see a lot of this type.  I am starting to see a pattern on how I paint them and I like that.  I used coordinating  scrapbooking paper for the clouds and one of a four sided stamp on the background.  I also, keep all different kinds of covers from soap to v8 bottles to make the circles.  To do them I just twist them in paint and then press them onto the page, I love the messy look it creates.  I have found that doing art journals has allowed me to keep things messy and not be so perfect, so this is a plus for me.  Thanks for stopping by and joining me in art class today. Blessings

Art Journal Challenge: Week Three

I have been doing a lot of art pages just to get caught up to date.  Since I have had to do two covers and 6 pages I think I am finally where I need to be.  This week's prompt was "What I Want to Accomplish in 2011".  Of course these are only a fraction of things I would love to accomplish, so I mainly focused on my art for this page.

Week Three:  What I Want to Accomplish in 2011, Jan. 22nd
I loved making this page because of all the colors.  I really didn't think a whole lot on where I wanted things I just started placing the collage items and it just seemed to come together.
I usually do not make any kind of new years resolutions because of not fulfilling them but I guess you sometimes do need some kind of goals and I am happy with these.  Also, I won't be including the materials made since most of them are made with the same items as the previous weeks.

Art Journal Challenge: Week Two

This week's challenge was based on our surroundings so I did my page with two places in mind, Georgia and Minnesota.  I know Georgia is my new home but because I was born and raised in Minnesota I just had to add that place too.
Week Two:  Surroundings, Jan. 15th
I have split my page in two and did scenes of what the weather is like in both places and some things I like about each.  Usually if I do magazine photos of women I associate them with me. I love using them because I feel that it captures what I may not be able to draw or paint, so you will see a lot of them.

Supplies used:  Scrapbooking paper, acrylic paint, rubber stamps, magazine collage images, and colored pencils.

Until next week's:

Art Journal Challenge: Cover of Journal & Week One

I have decided to start a 52 week art journal challenge for this year and am basing it from a challenge done last year by two women on the web and from some of my art books I have bought.   It is 52 art journal pages (one per week) with word prompts as a guide. I am excited for the journey and hope you will enjoy it as well as I will post them when I finish each weeks.  This truly will be a challenge for me since I never seem to finish ideas that have to last a whole year so we will see how I do.
As you know I am a vintage nut and enjoy collecting books, especially old ones, to use as my art journals.   I have prepared this old exercise book by gluing three pages together to make it stiff enought to work on. I usually don't finish the front and back covers of the book until later but I decided I needed to do this first, so after a lot of layers this is the result.

Front of Cover
This is the cover of my art journal challenge.   I  collage it with scrapbooking paper then added acrylic paints, colored pencils, stamps, and computer generated title words.  I am pleased with  the outcome and I really love the lady stamp in the corner as I associate her with me, so you will see a lot of her.

WEEK ONE:  USED DRYER SHEET

I had originally started this art journal/old book with another thought in mind  so the ladies picture was already there and it just screamed the journal prompt from the ladies on the web cheese cloth. I didn't have any cheese cloth so the next best thing was a
used dryer sheet and that was a sticky mess but turn out just as I had hoped.  The dryer sheet is wrapped around her face love the texture.

I love a new year and that means a new beginning, fresh start, etc. I will look back on last year only as a road already taken and this year a start of a new one.  May your new beginning be creative and
blessed by God.
